The condition of the football boots after they have had a running on a muddy wet pitch is not something that most are prepared for. They will look bad no doubt and obviously the boots need to be cleaned and even when there is no muddy running through a wet field…there is still a need to clean the football boots.

This will allow for extending the life of the boots that you’ve become comfortable in for a longer time. We know how difficult it is to get a good pair of boots that will serve us well…so why would we not want to look after them? That is why learning the correct method of how to clean football boots is what matters and should be learnt.

If you look at the design of the boots carefully…you will notice that there are many grooves and spikes on the soles and these have to be cleaned carefully. The main body of the boots has to be cleaned thoroughly as well. Cleaning football boots is not a difficult task…but it needs to be done properly.

The first thing that needs to be done is to clean off the dirt that has accumulated over the boots. Knocking together the shoes sole to sole will remove the grass…dirt and mud. When the initial dirt is off…use your hands or a dry cloth or even a toothbrush and get the mud stuck in the grooves or the spikes…and another way you can do this is to wet some newspapers and use these to clean the mud off.

Remove the loose mud and even get to the stubborn mud stuck in grooves and to get that mud off you will need to clean them with detergent water. Mix some mild detergent in water and mix well…then take a rough cloth and dip it in this mixture and use it to clean the shoes from every angle. Make sure that you drain the water off of the cloth before using it on the shoes and this is one tip you need to remember when learning how to clean leather shoes.

Now that the mud is completely removed…all you need to do is give it a final run down with water so that the layer of soap is completely washed off as well. Take a second piece of cloth and wipe the shoes on all sides with the clean water. Some people even learn how to clean football boots and run them under water for a thorough clean. After this has been…roll some newspapers and stuff them in the boots so that the excess water from inside is soaked out.

The newspapers will draw out the excess water…but there is a need to dry them thoroughly or you run the risk of ruining them with humidity. Leave them to dry in a cool dry place where there is a lot of air running through but make sure that you do not store them in direct sunlight or the leather can crack.

If you feel that the shine and luster of the leather has been lost…you can use a good quality leather oil to polish the shoes and restore the shine. This will help to add moisture to the dry leather and allow for the boots to last longer.

It is also important that you know how to store the boots and not just learn how to clean football boots. Store them preferably in a bag that is big enough for the boots to breathe but make sure that the boots are dry before storing them.

One of the best investments you can make is on quality leather shoes. The only catch is that you must take care of those shoes religiously. A quality pair of shoes will last you a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Also, the products you use on your leather footwear do not have to cost more than the price of the shoes. There are a number of tips to help you maintain those leather shoes so they will not only last longer, but will maintain a great look.

The first thing to remember is that two pairs of good quality leather shoes will last more than twice as long as one pair. This mathematical impossibility is nonetheless true, because by purchasing two pair of leather shoes, you can wear one pair every other day and allow the shoes to dry on a cedar shoe tree to absorb the moisture from your skin and from the leather while still holding the shoe in the correct shape. In this case, 1 + 1 = 3.

Cleaning your leather shoes is largely a matter of daily care and daily attention to any blemishes. Using all natural shoe care products allows the leather to breathe. Suggested cleaning products include those made specifically for leather, such as saddle soap. If you use saddle soap, and follow the treatment with mink oil, you will almost always have great success in keeping your footwear looking like new. These products can be found in most areas where shoe care items are found. Goop hand cleaner which can be found in most automotive supplies stores is another great product for getting the leather clean, without damaging the product. Goop is waterless and is excellent for removing oil and grease from the surface of the leather. Pine gum will help to restore your shoes when they are the victim of small nicks, scratches and cuts. This product soaks into the leather and serves as an excellent camouflage. If the color of the leather has faded, pine gum will help to restore the color and appearance.

If you often find that you are walking or working where there is a lot of moisture, you can provide some waterproofing for your leather shoes or boots. This will help to protect the footwear from salt stains, snow and from water. If shoes do get damp, store them on a shoe tree to dry, but never place the leather shoes close to direct heat such as a stove or fireplace unit. Beeswax provides excellent water-repellent properties for protecting your leather shoes from the elements. There are also waterproofing type products sold where shoe care products appear that will help protect your shoes against the elements.

Conditioning your footwear helps to maintain soft and supple leather. Preventing cracks in the surface of the leather means that less harmful agents can attack the leather. Keeping the leather soft means the shoes will fit more comfortably too. Lanolin is great for softening the leather, while emu oil restores the natural moisture of the leather by deep penetration into the shoe.

When you are cleaning and conditioning your shoes do not forget to take care of the inside of the shoe. Using Eucalyptus oil or Tea Tree oil prevents the deterioration of the stitching by fighting against mildew and mold in the interior of the shoe as well as in the top stitching.

Keep in mind that specialty leather products such as suede or patent leather have special products intended specifically for their care. For example, you would not want to use some of the oil or cream based products in caring for suede shoes. Often regular, gentle brushing to remove loose soil and a spray on suede cleaner will be just the thing for cleaning that type of leather.

If you find problems developing in the stitching or the soles of the show, or anywhere on the shoe in fact, put the cost of repairing the shoe against the cost of replace them and make a trip to the local repair shop for shoes. The price of a good repairman is well worth it in terms of lengthened shoe life.

Finally, many people have success in caring for their shoes with various household products not specifically created for leather shoes. For example, petroleum jelly rubbed gently into the leather then allowed to sit before a bit before being wiped off keeps leather uniform shoes looking great. Others swear by furniture polish sprayed on lightly and wiped down with a cloth.

Recently, it was 36 degrees in Miami, Florida, a record low temperature last seen in 1928! Most of the rest of the country was also in a deep cold snap, but were much more prepared than those of us in Florida. Being prepared is key to many things, including when people with diabetes deal with proper foot care, especially during the winter. Here is your winter foot care list to prevent any foot injuries or complications:

Blood Sugar Control – Maintain healthy BG levels and try to achieve an A1C of 6.5%-7.0% at all times. This can delay small vessel disease, which includes the eyes, kidneys, and feet.
Daily Foot Exams – This is a MUST – especially for those with neuropathy. Perform a foot exam at the same time each day, including the soles of the feet. It is necessary to identify any color change (red or purple), blisters, open sores, swelling red streaks, peeling or cracking. For those who can not see the soles of their feet, you can use hand-held long-arm mirror to inspect your feet. Check toenails to see if they have fungus or are ingrown or have infections.
Keep Feet Clean and Dry – Wash feet daily with lukewarm water at 90 degrees or less. Use a mild hypoallergenic soap with a soft wash cloth or sponge. Do not soak feet for longer than 10 minutes. Dry skin carefully by patting, not rubbing. Make sure to dry between each toe which reduces the risk of fungus or athletes’ foot.
Moisturize and Hydrate – Diabetes can damage the nerves, causing you to perspire less, which leaves your feet very dry. This can cause itching, peeling, and a risk of infection due to cracks in the skin. A good moisturizer can be a friend to your feet. The best time to apply moisturizer is when the skin is damp from a bath or shower. Apply cream on the top and bottom of the foot, but not between the toes to lessen risk of fungus forming. Drink plenty of water during the day – indoor heat can cause dehydration.
Proper Nail Trimming – Nails should be trimmed straight across with a nail clipper. File any rough edges with a nail file. If you can not reach your toe nails or they are thick, splitting, or yellow, please consult a podiatrist.
Wear Clean, Dry Socks – Socks are a MUST. Make sure the sock fits properly, not too tight or too loose, which can cause rubbing and irritation. Make sure you NEVER go barefoot even indoors. Socks should be made of mixed fibers such as cotton and acrylic and not nylon. This will help wick any perspiration from your skin. Avoid socks that have tight elastic bands or that are thick or bulky. Avoid wearing socks with thick seams at the toe. This can cause irritation.
Wear Comfortable Shoes – Avoid wearing tight toe boxes and high heels. Pointy high heels are dangerous for your feet and promote bunions that may require surgery in the future. Wear waterproof boots in the rain and warm boots in the cold.
Treat Wounds Quickly – Even the smallest cut or scrape can cause an infection, so use a topical antibiotic ointment after washing with mild soap. If it does not improve within a few days, a visit to the podiatrist is necessary. Do not use over the counter corn, callus or wart remover. These chemicals can burn or damage the skin – instead, consult a podiatrist.

A few simple backpacking tent care and storage tips can make the difference between a tent that lasts for one season and a tent that lasts a lifetime.

A backpacking tent is a serious investment and one of the most important pieces of equipment a backpacker carries. You want your tent to function well for as long as possible, keeping you warm and dry on many backcountry trips. Take good care of it, and a good backpacking tent can last for many years.

First, I recommend that you buy the highest quality tent you can afford. Cheap tents are made with cheap materials that don’t hold up well to the rigors of wilderness travel. A more expensive tent will probably cost you less over the long run, because you won’t have to replace it every year. Also, high-end tents are simply more comfortable, adding to your outdoor enjoyment.

That being said, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good quality tent. Some companies like Kelty and Eureka make affordable tents that are very durable and well-designed. Do your research before you buy to ensure that you’re getting a well-made tent.

A good backpacking tent is made to take a certain amount of abuse; after all, it’s designed to be out in the elements, protecting you from wind, rain, snow and bugs. But that doesn’t mean you can’t seriously damage it if you aren’t careful when handling it.

Pack the tent carefully in your backpack. Make sure your liquids are sealed well and packed below the tent; stove fuel in particular can do real damage if it leaks. Keep sharp objects like knives and trekking poles away from it.

Pitch your tent on a hard surface that is clear of sharp sticks or rocks. Consider using a ground cloth to protect the tent floor. I don’t normally use a ground cloth when backpacking, to save weight; but I always use one if I’m car camping.

If you expect any wind or rain, stake the tent down using all available guy lines. Try to get even tension all around; don’t overstress one side of the tent fly or body.

Don’t pitch the tent near a campfire. Sparks from the fire can land on the tent, burning holes in it.

Keep sharp objects away from the tent, and don’t lean on it. Backpacking tents aren’t designed to bear a person’s weight.

Don’t leave your tent out in the sun any longer than necessary. UV rays break down the fibers in the canopy over time.

Keep your tent as clean as you can. Leave your muddy boots outside, and shake out the dirt when you’re taking it down. If it’s really dirty when you get home, wipe it down with a mild soap solution.

When you take the tent down, break down the poles from the middle first. This keeps the tension of the inner cord even, preventing overstretching.

Understanding this amazing little fibre

Sheepskin has a quality that no other fibre can claim and that is that it has natural self-cleaning capabilities! The natural, antibacterial properties that sheepskins fibres offer, make it body odor resistant! I’ve read that if you were to wear a wool sweater for 40 days in a row, it would not smell! How amazing is that?

The fibre itself is made up of many different layers, but the outside has these tiny scales that when rubbed together, they brush away dirt, and repel water. Then inside the fibre is this amazing wick that absorbs moisture but doesn’t retain any, it releases it out into the air. When the wool fibre does this, it can let out a small amount of lanolin, (the oil that’s found in the wool) and that lanolin then acts like a little soap washing, which clean the sheepskin.

The fibre is mold and mildew resistant, simply because there is no moisture retained and therefore can’t grow. Same for dust mites, they want a humid and moist condition to thrive in. This is perhaps the best reason to use wool products; you get to create a natural, healthy environment that reduces allergies and asthma incidents. Now, it’s not that you never have to do any maintenance with your sheepskin products, but as you can see, not allot or at least not often. Here are some simple guidelines to maintain the beauty of your sheepskin products;

For Baby & Medical Sheepskin Rugs

Due to the natural lanolin in the wool, genuine sheepskin tends to be self-cleaning.

Daily airing will keep your rug fresh and help maintain its self-cleaning properties.
Small, soiled areas can be sponged off.
Hand or machine wash once a month, ideally using a mild detergent that is enzyme-free with no bleaches. (Such as Euclan Wool Wash).

Wool fibres are resilient and easily bounce back to their original springy appearance. A vigorous shake will help restore the soft, fluffy appearance of the wool.

For Sheepskin Rugs

Only use a mild detergent that is enzyme-free with no bleaches. (Such as Eucalan Wool Wash ).
Only wash in cold or lukewarm water (up to 40 C/108 F).
For rugs stretch to shape while they are still damp.
Hang out to dry away from direct sunlight.
Brush when damp and then again when dry. (Use a Sheepskin Brush)

For Sheepskin Footwear and Mittens

Light stains can be removed using a damp cloth to prevent excessive soiling.

Hand wash in cool or lukewarm water, using a mild detergent, such as Eucalan Wool Wash(as mentioned above). This detergent is formulated especially for sheepskin products and doesn’t contain chemicals found in regular detergents that may harm the sheepskin leather & wool.

Do NOT put sheepskin footwear or mittens in the washing machine.

Wash separately from other items and rinse in cold water.

After washing, remove excess water using paper towels, and if required reshape.

Allow to dry naturally and slowly.

Do NOT dry in sunlight or direct heat.

Following these simple tips, will help you enjoy long, lasting pleasure of your sheepskin products.

Looking for a pair of wellington boots that will keep your feet warm and dry during the long winter months? If you are then there are several different pairs now available for you to choose from. However, some because of the name attached to them tend to be quite expensive to buy.

In recent months at some of the summer festivals a number of celebrities including Naomi Campbell have been seen sporting a pair of Jimmy Choo Hunter Wellington Boots this year. However, at a price tag of more than 600 this seems a little excessive for footwear whose main task is to stop your feet getting wet.

So if money is an issue there are plenty of other wonderful styles of wellington boots now available that look just as good and cost far less. For example you could go for the traditional pair of Hunter Wellingtons that are available and which come in wide variety of colors not just the traditional blue or green. How about a more exciting pair of red, pink or even bright yellow ones?

Then if you are looking for something that is a little more daring and will keep your feet warm as well this winter then Ugg Australia’s Wallingford Rain Boot is worth considering. These like the traditional Hunter Wellington can be brought online from places at eBay and come with a more respectable and affordable price tag of between 50 and 100. As you will soon discover with the Ugg range of rain boots these again come in a range of colors and finding a pair to match with your outfit should not prove a problem.

Want To Learn More?

When it comes to highly active sports, you need to be sure that you’re properly equipped to be able to bring out your very best performance on every occasion, and this statement very much holds true when talking about surfing, wakeboarding and other wave related activities. These shorts are one of your primary gears when it comes to surfing and this article will provide you with any and all information that will prove useful regardless of whether you’re dealing with women’s or men’s board shorts.

General Purchasing Tips:

In buying men or women’s board shorts here are a few things that you should take into consideration:

Fabric – In choosing the right board shorts make sure that the fabric used is one that is quick drying and lightweight. The advised materials for this would either be polyester or a mixture of polyester and elastine allowing for unrestricted movements when surfing, swimming or boarding.
Comfort – Some board shorts come with an inner mesh sports short that helps in keeping your skin dry. This particular feature also comes with a built-in support. If you purchase ones that don’t have it however, you can use swim briefs underneath for added protection.
Feature -Durable elastic waistbands along with drawstrings are essential for any type of swim shorts. Strong stitching or seamless technology is also necessary along with a Velcro fly fastening in the pocket. These features are important to insure maximum comfort, style and performance regardless of how rough things may get.
Look – The look of your board shorts are also very important but will generally depend on your particular taste. There are plenty of color combinations and designs that you can choose from as well, just make sure that they fit the earlier criteria’s though as you wouldn’t want to end up with good-looking shorts that get damaged on your first few waves.

Care Tips:
To help keep your shorts looking new, here are some care tips to remember:
Always follow the care instructions on the label and if possible, rinse them out immediately after each use, especially if you’ve used them in the pool. This will keep them comfortable the next time you wear them and will protect from fading out quickly.
Board shorts are best washed in cold water with similar colors. Gentle machine wash, finished off by hand can maximize the life of your surf wear. It’s also best that you line dry them inside out under the shade instead of machine drying.

The dog days of summer are upon us! This means lots of fun in the sun for humans, but what about for pets! As a Scottsdale pet sitter, I am out and about caring for pets all summer and I want to share some tips on how to keep your pets safe this summer!

- Limit walks. Dogs and cats can’t perspire like people and only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. So walking outdoors is rough for them when temperatures are above 90 degrees.

If the sidewalk is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it is too hot for them.
Summertime dog walking in Scottsdale is possible, but not advised unless you have time and patience!

If you do walk your dog, outfit them with protective doggy boots, bring water, take lots of breaks and stick to grassy and shady areas.

- Housing dogs indoors.Try to keep your pets inside during the summer. If you are worried they will be destructive inside, crate training is an ideal solution. That way they are safe and cool inside your house! If you feel bad that they will be in a crate all day, hire a pet sitter to let them out mid day for a potty break!

- Provide fresh water. When the dogs are outside during the summer remember that plenty of fresh water is vital. Provide extra bowls and maybe a baby pool for pets that knock over water bowls or step in them to cool their paws.

Ceramic bowls are best for outdoor use as stainless steel bowls heat up fast! Glass bowls are okay as long as they aren’t on wooden decks as that combination created a deck fire for a Seattle family! If you have an underground pool, make sure their is a fence around it or that your pets know how to swim and where the pool steps are!

- Provide shade. Make sure that there is shade in your yard at every hour of the day. Remember that as the sun moves, shade moves. There is nothing worse then a pet stuck outside especially in the Arizona sun, with no escape.

- Dogs that should remain indoors during the summer heat no matter what are smooshie faced breeds. Their short snouts make it difficult for them to pant and cool their body temperature. Breeds include, pugs, boxers, shih-tzus, boston terriers, llaso apso, etc.

Overweight dogs, puppies and elderly dogs also have a hard time regulating heat.

If you shave your pet for the summer, make sure there is enough fur left to protect them from sunburn!

- Monitor what your pets eat. Summer is often a time when people fertilize their lawns and work in their gardens. As a Scottsdale dog walker I walk dogs that love to try to eat random items off the ground. Be very careful when walking your dog, never let your dog eat anything off the ground! Be especially cautious around fertilized lawns and gardens as plant food, fertilizer, and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them.

If you plan to go hiking, being prepared with the correct hiking boots will be all that separates you from having a lovely time and returning home covered in blisters. There is much more to selecting an appropriately fitting pair of boots than walking into the store and selecting the first pair that catches your eye. You should consider hiking to be a sport, and you will want equipment that works correctly.

You should know what type of hiking you plan to be doing in your new hiking boots when you go to purchase them so that you get the correct type. You should think about what time of year you will be hiking, will it be in the warmer months or will it be cold outside, and also what the terrain conditions will be.

After you find a pair that suits your qualifications, you should always be sure to try them on before buying them. Make sure that your ankles are able to bend and flex properly, and also that you have enough flexibility in your foot. The average man walks with a heel to toe stride.

Given this natural patter, you can purchase a motion control hiking boot as opposed tot he traditional kind. These shoes are very high quality and are more durable and sturdy. They will correct your stride if you naturally roll slightly inwards with you regular walking motion. If you have an abnormal stride these will be a good choice for you, but they are heavier so the average hiker may find them unnecessary.

The general design of stability shoes includes thicker heels and increased flexibility. These are nice for length hikes due to their lighter composition and increased comfort. These boots offer plenty of support for your foot, though, but lack the bulky nature of the motion control boots.

Another popular choices is a cushioned walking shoe. If you have a high arch, this may be a good selection for you as it will offer more support. They still have the necessary thick heel, but they offer the least amount of general support. However, they will be more flexible than most other types of shoes for some hiking.

If you are only an occasional hiker, you will probably only need either lightweight boots or trail shoes. Trail shoes are designed to be durable and rugged, but are also comfortable and breath much better than boots. If you are just doing some light day-hiking or backpacking, you will find the lightness they offer compared to traditional boots comforting.
